For families, the best area is close to the southern end of Camps Bay Beach, near the tidal pool. This part of the beach has calmer, shallower water, which suits toddlers and younger children far better than the open ocean further along.
Why walking distance matters
Camps Bay is hilly. Staying further up the slope can mean a steep walk back after a day at the beach, which is hard work with tired children and beach gear in tow. Staying within walking distance of the beach removes that problem entirely. You can head down for a swim, back for a nap, and down again in the afternoon, without needing a car each time.
All of our properties are within walking distance of the beach, so this is not a trade off you need to make. You get easy, repeated access to the sand and the tidal pool, without the climb.
What else families should look for nearby
- Easy access to cafés and restaurants for quick meals, so you are not cooking every night.
- Proximity to the tidal pool specifically, not just the beach in general, if you have younger children.
- Flat, manageable walking routes, since Camps Bay’s terrain can be steep away from the beachfront.
What guests often ask
Is the whole of Camps Bay good for families, or just certain parts? The beachfront area is the most practical base. Further up the hill, the views are excellent, but the daily walk to and from the beach becomes harder with children.
Do families need a car if staying near the beach? Not for day to day life in Camps Bay. A car or tour is more useful for day trips further afield, such as Boulders Beach or the winelands.
