Tourist attractions in and around Cape Town
The easiest way to see the Cape Town tourist attractions in one day is to take the red hop-on / hop-off Sightseeing bus. The bus stop is in Camps Bay, opposite The Bay Hotel. http://www.citysightseeing.co.za/
Cape Point
The trip up to the promontory at Cape Point (by funicular or foot) leads to a stunning prospect over the False Bay coast and back towards Cape Town. The Cape Peninsula National Park has several seaside picnic spots and offers boating and other facilities. Tel. 021 780 9010. Website: www.capepoint.co.za
Robben Island
There are daily ferry trips to Robben Island, weather permitting, leaving from the Clock Tower precinct at the V&A Waterfront. Allow three and a half hours for your trip and book in advance. Tel. 021 419 1300 Website: www.robben-island.org.za
Table Mountain
You can either walk or take the cable car to the upper cable station which is situated at 1086m. Even in clear, warm weather take a sweater or windbreaker, as it tends to be cool at that altitude. Tel. 021 424 5148 for weather reports as bad weather halts operations. Website www.table-mountain.co.za
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
This working harbour and shopping/entertainment development has become Cape Town’s and South Africa’s most-visited tourist attraction. Tel. 021 408 7600 Website: www.waterfront.co.za
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosh has been voted as one of the Seven Magnificent Botanical Gardens of the world. There are Sunday summer sunset concerts (Dec – Feb) and carols by candlelight at Christmas, so pack a picnic and enjoy. Tel. 021 799 880.
Shark Diving Experience
If you are the adventurous type this one is for you! Head out to Gansbaai (2.5 hour drive) and experience an up close and personal cage dive with Great White sharks.
Hiking & Walking
There are numerous hikes throughout the Table Mountain National Park, varying in difficulty and terrain. We would not suggest hiking alone as the unpredictable weather can often lead to disorientation and it is incredibly easy to get lost on the various trails. Lions head is a circular ascent that takes roughly 1 hour, it is a safe and busy route and is great for sunsets / full moon hikes.
