Somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a few degrees of extra warmth are about to change how the whole world talks about the weather this year.
Scientists are watching the return of El Niño. Some are calling this one a “Super El Niño.” And while the name sounds dramatic, the science behind it is simple enough to explain over a coffee.
What Is El Niño, Really?
El Niño is part of a natural cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. Every few years, the surface waters of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean warm up more than usual. That warm water shifts wind patterns, rainfall belts, and temperatures across the globe.
Think of the Pacific as a giant battery. Under normal conditions, trade winds push warm surface water westward, toward Asia. Cooler water rises up to replace it near South America. During El Niño, those trade winds weaken. The warm water sloshes back east instead of piling up in the west. That single shift changes weather patterns from Australia to the Amazon to southern Africa.
A “Super El Niño” simply means the warming is unusually strong. Sea surface temperatures in the key monitoring zones can rise more than two degrees above average. It is worth noting that meteorological bodies like the World Meteorological Organization do not use “super” as an official term. It is a media shorthand for an intense event. But intense or not, the effect on global weather is real.
When Does It Start?
Forecasters have tracked this event building since early 2026. Climate models point to El Niño conditions taking hold around May to July 2026, with high confidence it will strengthen through the rest of the year. The last event on this scale was 2023-24, one of the strongest on record.
What This Means Closer to Home
Cape Town’s winter weather is shaped by a different system: cold fronts and mid-latitude cyclones rolling in off the Southern Ocean. El Niño’s grip on our region is felt more in the summer rainfall parts of the country, not directly on our winter rain.
