We get it—your flight isn’t until tonight, but check-out was at 10:00 AM. Or you’ve landed in Cape Town fresh off a long-haul flight, full of energy, but your check-in isn’t for a few hours.
During peak season, our calendar is packed with back-to-back bookings. Because of this tight turnaround, we are often unable to accommodate early check-in or late check-out requests. You are able to book an early arrival or late departure at 50% of the daily rate – subject to availability when booking.
If you were not able to book an early arrival or late departure – don’t let that put a damper on your day! Cape Town is a city made for exploring, and a few luggage-free hours are a gift, not a burden. Here are our top recommendations for making the most of your time before check-in or after check-out.
First things first, let’s deal with your bags. The last thing you want is to be hauling your suitcases around the city.
The Luggage Solution: Your Key to Freedom
Our Top Tip: Use a Luggage Service. We highly recommend http://www.bagdrop.co.za. It’s a brilliant, secure service where they can either:
- Store your luggage for the day and deliver it back to you at a designated time and place.
- Collect your bags and send them directly to the airport**, so you can go straight to security later.
This one simple step unlocks the entire city for you, hands-free.
How to spend the day:
1. Have a meal: Skip the rushed airport snack. Head to the V&A Waterfront and enjoy a long, lazy brunch or dinner with great harbour views. There are dozens of fantastic cafes perfect for sipping a final flat white and reminiscing about your trip. The V&A Waterfront has safe parking and you can leave your luggage in the car.
2. One Last Souvenir Hunt: The V&A Waterfront is the ideal place for last-minute gift shopping. From high-end boutiques to authentic African craft markets, you can find something for everyone back home.
3. A Cinematic Escape: Got a few hours to kill? Catch the latest blockbuster at the Nu Metro Cinema at the Waterfront. It’s a comfortable, entertaining way to escape the midday sun or a bit of wind.
4. A Spa Session: Extend that holiday glow. Book a treatment at one of the many luxurious spas in the city or at the Waterfront hotels. A massage or facial is the perfect way to relax before a long flight.
For the Afternoon Before Check-In: Start Your Adventure Immediately
Your energy is high, and the city is calling. Drop your bags and dive right in.
1. Park Securely and Play: If you have a rental car, the V&A Waterfront offers safe, monitored parking. Leave the car and explore the area on foot. Walk the scenic Sea Point Promenade, watch the seals, and breathe in the fresh sea air.
2. Hit the Ground Running with a Tour: Maximize your time by booking a private tour for your first day. Many tour operators can accommodate your luggage in their vehicles. Whether it’s a private Cape Peninsula tour, a wine tasting adventure, or a city sights itinerary, you can start your holiday the moment you land.
3. A Taste of Cape Town: Head to a trendy neighbourhood like Bree Street or Kloof Street and explore the incredible food scene. Find a spot for a long lunch, people-watch, and start your culinary journey. Please make sure that your luggage is not visible in your car.
4. Embrace the Outdoors: If you’re an active traveler, this is your chance. Hike up Lion’s Head (if you have 3-4 hours) or take the cable car up Table Mountain. You’ll be rewarded with the best possible introduction to the city. You can not leave your luggage in the car to do this unfortunately.
Bonus Idea: The Perfect Buffer Day
Planning a future trip? Consider booking an early arrival or late departure or the final night in a hotel near the airport. You can check out of our property on time, enjoy all the activities listed above, and then have a comfortable, stress-free base to return to before your early morning flight.
The Bottom Line:
A gap between your accommodation and your flight isn’t a problem—it’s an opportunity. With a little planning and our trusted luggage solution, you can turn a potential travel headache into an extra chapter of your Cape Town adventure.
Have a wonderful time exploring.
