Yes, Camps Bay is one of the safer areas in Cape Town for visitors. It is a popular, well patrolled tourist suburb, and most guests walk around comfortably during the day and early evening.
That said, sensible precautions still matter here, just as they would in any city.
During the day
Camps Bay Beach, the promenade, and the main restaurant strip are busy and well used by both locals and tourists. Walking between your accommodation, the beach, and nearby restaurants during daylight hours is generally straightforward.
At night
Stick to well lit, busier streets. Avoid quiet side roads or empty stretches of beach after dark. If you are heading somewhere further away, a short Uber ride is a simple way to stay safe.
Simple habits that help
- Keep valuables out of sight, both on you and in a parked car.
- Avoid having your phone out constantly while walking, especially near the beachfront.
- Lock car doors, even for short stops.
- Do not give any beggars money, best not to engage and walk on.
What guests often ask
Is Cape Town as a whole safe? Cape Town has areas with higher crime, but these are generally not areas tourists visit or pass through. The main tourist neighbourhoods, including Camps Bay, Sea Point, and the V&A Waterfront, are well trodden and considered safe with normal precautions.
Do I need to worry about crime while staying in a villa or apartment? Most of our Camps Bay rental properties have gated access, alarm system, armed response and electric fencing.
