If coming from Cape Town, after Ou Kaapse Weg, turn right into Silvermine. Pay at the gate, at the moment it is R35 per adult and it is free with a Wild Card. You might be asked for an ID.
Drive all the way to where the road makes a bend to the right and park there. There are toilets on the left.
Elephant’s Eye is a 5.1 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail.
You will pick up the signs by the toilets, walk on the right side of the dam and follow the signs. It is obviously a climb but there is no scrambling involved.
The name is derived from the fact that this mountain looks like the shape of an elephant’s head, and the cave is perfectly located where the eye would be.
After the hike, you can enjoy a swim in the dam or a picnic. In winter, BBQ’s are allowed.
