Happy Holiday South Africa!
On the 24th of September, South Africa celebrates Heritage Day.
Way back in our history it was not a pupblic holiday but known as Shaka Day, named after King Shaka, the king of the Zulus in Natal. The Inkatha Freedom Party which has a large Zulu contingent requested that the 24th of September is recognised as a public holiday. A compromised was reached and it became Heritage Day.
The day is now known at Braai Day as it is a culinary tradition for South Africans to have braais or BBQ’s.
In 2007 it became Braai4Heritage which was endorsed by the South Africa’s National Heritage Council.
Today is a beautiful day in Camps Bay, sunny and no wind. All the shops across South Africa have stocked up on boerewors, chops, steak, charcoal, fire lighters etc. A beautiful, sunny day off in the middle of the week, spent with friends and family around a BBQ – what more would you want?
