Hiking up Simonsberg from Tokara
I hike on Table Mountain often but I found the view and surrounds of this hike even more spectacular. You are allowed to enter from first light and entrance is free of charge. Drive to Tokara Wine & Olive Estate and pass the Tokara Restaurant on the left. Drive into the tarred road with the No Entry sign.
When you reach the gate, park on the right hand side and sign in.
https://www.thelema.co.za/The guards are extremely friendly and will explain which direction to take. You are required to be back by 16:00 at the latest. At the gate turn right and as you reach a fence, left in the direction of the mountain and parallel to the fence of Thelema Mountain Vineyards.
Carry on next to the fence with the vineyards on the left. At the dam veer to the left and up.
You will see the Simonsberg Conservancy sign. From here it is just up, up and up.
This hike is not for the faint hearted. Up is easier then down. Part of the hike is through a protea forest of which you will appreciate the shade if you go in Summer. I would not suggest to start the hike very late in Summer as the mountain gets full sun in afternoon. The climb is 1399 meters and can take a couple of hours up and probably more down. Be sure to take enough water. You will be rewarded with the most amazing view.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at Tokara restaurant afterwards. They sell a killer Cabernet Sauvignon, if you would like to stock up on your wine collection.
