What’s happening in and around Cape Town: The CAPE GATE WINE FESTIVAL

The Cape Gate Wine Festival, which takes place on Friday, 21 and Saturday, 22 August offers wine lovers the chance to taste and buy wine from all over South Africa from the 20 wineries exhibiting at the event.

A new addition this year is the FREE wine theatre which is run by the The Cape Wine Academy (Proprietary) Limited, which is the recognised leader in wine appreciation education in South Africa. It has a strong brand that has been built up since 1979 and is positioned to benefit and support the changes that have taken place in the wine industry since 2001.

On Friday at 18h30 we start off with Delheim’s Cupcakes and wine pairing, followed by a tasting of six top Shiraz’s at 19h30, which is just perfect for all red wine lovers.   Saturday at 14h00 is the tasting of six Chenin blancs, a grape variety which is often described as the wine which will make South Africa famous. At 15h00 chocoholics can sit down for Lanzerac’s chocolate and wine pairing, and we end off the day with a tasting at 16h00 of sweet and dessert wines like Port, Muscadel, Jerepigo and Noble Late Harvest.

Michelle Grimbeek, Managing Director of the CWA says that they love interacting with wine lovers at these events.  “Part of our mandate is to promote wine enjoyment in a responsible way, and at wine festivals you have crowds who love their wine and are open to experiencing this wonderful South African product in a fun but educational setting, without it being intimidating.”

Participating wineries include:  Ayama Wines, Beyerskloof, Blaauwklippen Vineyards,  Boschkloof, De Krans, Delheim Wines, Doolhof Estate, Eaglevlei Wines, Eerstehoop Wines, Groenland, Lanzerac Estate, L’Avenir Stellenbosch, Orange River Cellars, Ormonde Vineyards, Perdeberg Wines, Ruitersvlei Wines , Simonsvlei, Solms-Delta, Villiera Wines, Wellington Winery and Yonder Hill Wines.

The Pebbles Project, which looks after disadvantaged children, especially those impacted by alcohol, is the charity beneficiary of the festival and will be present to spread their message and raise funds and awareness.
