It will be my birthday next month and it would have been the famous Nelson Mandela’s birthday on the 18th as well. In South Africa we celebrate Mandela Day, a day in honor of Madiba, when we each do 67 minutes of good will.
The Mandela Day campaign message is:
“Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes.”
“We would be honored if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity,” according to a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf.
Getting back to birthdays. Here are some of the perks for getting a year older in Cape Town.
- If you have a South African ID – you can have a free Table Mountain cable car ride. The cable car will be closed from the 8th of July 2019 for more than a month for routine maintenance. You are however able to redeem your free ride when they re-open, if your birthday was during this time.
- Loyalty members get a discount at Sorbet on beauty treatments. There is a Sorbet in Camps Bay, Seapoint, Gardens, Constantia etc.
- VIP card holders, get a R300 discount off their meal at the Greek Fisherman in the V&A Waterfront on their birthday.
So there you have it, if you are worried about getting a year older – do not despair, there are some fun advantages.
Please note, as usual, T & C’s do apply – not to get older, but for the advantages…
