My 3 favourite places to mountain bike in Cape Town
Tokai forest, Southern Suburbs, Cape Town
There is quite a climb, but you are rewarded with great single track. You can cycle all the way up to the mast which is a 1000 meter climb. Half way up the mast the jeep track becomes tar road, you might be relieved for a second or two but the steepness makes your relief vanish in a flash. When cycling to the mast on colder days take something warm as the wind chill factor will make your teeth chatter. There are loads of baboons in Tokai, they are a bit of a menace but just ignore them.
If you go on a Saturday, you can go for breakfast at the Porter Estate Produce Market which is at the Chrysalis Academy, Porter Estate, between Tokai Forest and the Table Mountain National Park.
Jonkershoek offers an easy circle route for the less adventurous and energetic. If you take one of the roads leading off the circle route, there are a few killer hills, but the views and the single track make up for the pain and effort.
The tea garden at the parking area serves great scones. About two kilometers from Jonkershoek on your left is a guy who does bike washing and maintenance, if you fancy spending the afternoon, guilt-free on the couch.
Table Mountain, Cape Town
There are so many jeep tracks to explore on Table Mountain. You can cycle from Higgovale or Vredehoek to Rhodes Memorial, which is a popular breakfast or lunch stop with great views over Cape Town. There is a time trial every Tuesday afternoon from Vredehoek to the old ford, the starting time varies according to the sunset.
