Dinner at the Test Kitchen in Cape Town

This weekend, Mike and I were fortunate to get a table at The Test Kitchen. It is currently the best restaurant in South Africa – a well deserved award.

The owner Luke Dale-Roberts was the executive chef at La Colombe for four years. During this time, La Colombe won the title of Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Africa and Middle East 2010 and an amazing 12th place in the overall San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2010.

Luke also won the title Chef of the Year at the 2011 Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards.

Heston Blumenthal has given The Test Kitchen raving reviews and everyone I know who has been there thought it was fabulous.  I thought it would be good but I didn’t think I would be absolutely blown away.  It was a gastronomic experience as I have never had before.

To all the future visitors to Cape Town, I recommend you book your table NOW.  The restaurant is taking bookings for May 2014 at the moment so you have a bit more than three months to diet and get excited.

This is what I consumed during the evening together with a glass or two of Cap Classique:

Grilled scallops, fine bean, tofu miso suke, braised scallop dressing, miso on toast, braised shitake and raw shitake.

Pork Belly, pressed apples, wild rosemary infused honey, blue cheese cream and crackling.

Pan seared springbok, baby beets, almond and red onion stuffing, springbok skilbadjie, roasted springbok and beetroot extraction.

Assiette of chocolate, grilled white chocolate and cinnamon sponge, caramelia cremeux and guanja parfait.
